This mesmerizing and demanding political play required an equally bold design. Simple but visually powerful images served as a background for the action: the walls and corridors of the monastery, a boat sailing with 11 virgins on it, a northern landscape with an apparition of temptation. As swift changes were required, some elements (the rakes) were permanent whereas others changed to suit particular scenes.
