Mecca Al-Haram Mosque

AVCIARCHITETS, CINICI, and ARUP jointly prepared this proposal for the redevelopment of the Al-Haram Mosque and the creation of the Al-Haram Urban Quarter, following a limited invitation for ideas from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In addition to the design of the new mosque, the scheme re-creates an urban quarter in the area of the medieval town Al-Shamiyah (which has already been demolished) and allows 1,5 million people to simultaneously attend prayer in view of Kaa’ba while occupying praying terraces above the city.

Client : MOHE - Ministry of Higher Education of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Sector : Civic
Location : Saudi Arabia, Mecca
Year : 2008
