Avlu Restaurant

London, England
Spring 2004

Avlu, a new Turkish restaurant/take-away in west London, asked Avci Architects to expand and elevate its environment. However, it was critical that the design didn’t alienate an already loyal customer base.

In Turkish an “avlu” is a traditional courtyard. So Avci Architects’ design solution took its cue from the restaurant’s name. The design incorporates a natural timber wall, which draws guests towards the rear of the restaurant and showcases its avlu. Its interior finishes of contrasting natural materials and natural light evoke a Zen-like quality of serenity and calm.
